ApoImmune, Inc. is a biotechnology company developing novel immunotherapies, which are treatments based on regulating the host immune system to fight disease. For example, the immune system can be activated to fight disease in cases such as cancer and infectious disease (tuberculosis, influenza), or suppressed in instances of autoimmune disease (Type 1 diabetes) and transplantation including organ, tissue, and blood stem cells. The scientific foundation of the Company is built on two platform technologies that are used to modulate the immune system - ProtEx and ApoVax.
ApoVax is being applied to cancer vaccines and vaccines for infectious diseases. The first family of the ApoVax products is the ApoVax104 vaccine line. Unlike conventional vaccines on the market, this unique vaccine stimulates both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system, and downregulates immune evasion mechanisms employed by chronic infections and tumors. ApoVax104 is a recombinant protein vaccine that can be used in conjunction with any antigen to create disease-specific vaccines that have clinical value in a multitude of diseases. The first clinical application resulting from the ApoVax104 platform is ApoVax104-HPV, a novel therapeutic vaccine for cervical cancer which will enter a Phase I clinical trial in Q2 2010.
ApoImmune's second platform technology, ProtEx, is a technology that enables recombinant immunoregulatory proteins to be placed on the surface of cells, tissues, organs, and synthetic surfaces in order to modulate the immune system. The lead product for the ProtEx technology is Apo195 which enhances and improves upon current transplant therapies by inducing immune tolerance to the transplants while reducing the long-term use of potent immunosuppressive drugs. Proof of principle for Apo195 has been obtained for organ, tissue, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant settings. The first clinical application for Apo195 will be as an insulin replacement therapy for the treatment of Type I Diabetes.
