Director, Protein Purification and Production

Description
The primary responsibilities for this position include designing and developing scalable processes for isolation and purification of recombinant therapeutic proteins. This person will develop, optimize and scale up purification processes as well as develop appropriate analytical assays to support purification development.

ApoImmune is an immunotherapy-based company developing innovative vaccines for cancer, infectious and autoimmune diseases. ApoImmune's lead product is a proprietary therapeutic vaccine for cervical cancer that will enter a Phase I clinical trial in Q3 2009. ApoImmune has raised over $2 MM through private funding, and NIH SBIR/STTR and matching state grants in excess of $5 MM, further validating its innovative technologies for combating disease. Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to produce recombinant therapeutic proteins for our novel immunotherapies and vaccines. This person will be responsible for developing and optimizing purification processes for recombinant proteins for pre-clinical and early-phase clinical trials. She/he will plan and manage strategy for purification process design, optimization, scale-up, and process troubleshooting to meet project timelines and company goals.

Requirements
Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry or a similar field with at least 5 years industrial experience isolating, purifying, and characterizing proteins expressed in mammalian, bacterial, and insect cell systems. Candidates must have expertise with ion-exchange, hydrophobic interaction, size exclusion, affinity and reverse-phase chromatographies, and filtration. Working knowledge of GE Healthcare AKTA protein purification systems required. Experience working with immunoregulatory, co-stimulatory proteins an advantage. Familiarity with cGMP practices is a plus as is a working knowledge of formulation development.

This position requires a highly motivated individual who will be organized, self-motivated and comfortable in a flexible working environment, which includes simultaneous projects and both independent and team working situations. The candidate must also have the ability to work effectively in a fast paced start-up environment with little supervision. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
